Robert J. Havighurst was born in DePere, Wisconsin on June 5, 1900. He grew up in Ohio and Illinois where his father, a former Professor of History at Lawrence College in Wisconsin, served as a Methodist minister. He received his A.B. from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1921 and his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the Ohio State University in 1924.
